HoJo Challenge Finalists Spread the Happy; Now They Need Your Vote

PARSIPPANY, NJ--(Marketwire - May 5, 2010) -  What do neon-colored facial hair and thousands of toothbrushes have in common?

They represent just two of eight happiness-spreading entries chosen to advance to the next round of The Give Happy Challenge, a competition sponsored by the Howard Johnson® hotel brand and the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team that encourages people throughout the U.S. and Canada to make others happy.

Both brands have a legacy of spreading fun and cheer and The Give Happy Challenge was developed to encourage others to do the same.

The eight finalists, who are competing for a grand prize of $15,000 for the cause of their choice and a personal visit from the Harlem Globetrotters, are now taking part in the first round of a three-round tournament on www.thegivehappychallenge.com. The voting public decides who wins.

Altruistic finalists include Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, Ill., where in honor of friends and colleagues, the school's male teachers creatively shaved or dyed their facial hair to raise money to fight cancer; and Savannah Christian Preparatory School in Richmond Hill, Ga., where a creative lesson on the scarcity of supplies in earthquake-devastated Haiti led to unsolicited student donations of thousands of toothbrushes, water bottles and other basic supplies.

The additional finalists include: West Adams Preparatory High School and Magnolia Elementary School in Los Angeles; Carol Park Elementary School in Coral Springs, Fla.; Metropolitan Ministries Partnership School in Tampa, Fla.; McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md.; Osseo United Methodist Church in Osseo, Minn.; and Lower Dauphin Middle School in Hummelstown, Pa. Videos detailing all the finalists' submissions can be viewed at www.thegivehappychallenge.com.

"I'm amazed at the genuine sincerity and overwhelming goodwill that the entrants demonstrated in their submissions and take great satisfaction in knowing that Howard Johnson will help one of them do even more great work," said Howard Johnson Brand Senior Vice President Rui Barros. "Now their communities must rally around them and show their support by voting for their chosen cause."

Voting for round one of The Give Happy Challenge will end at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, May 16, 2010 with the advancing finalists being announced on May 18, 2010, when round two voting begins. In each round, the number of finalists will be lessened by half, with only those with the most votes advancing. Voters will be able to cast one vote per day. Complete rules are available at www.thegivehappychallenge.com
