Hoku Starts Polysilicon Ramp-Up at Pocatello Facility

POCATELLO, ID--(Marketwire - April 7, 2010) - Hoku Materials, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hoku Corporation (NASDAQ: HOKU), established to manufacture and sell polysilicon for the solar market, today announced that it had initiated pilot production of polysilicon at its manufacturing facility in Pocatello, Idaho.

Hoku said it had commenced initial operational testing of a portion of its Siemens-based polysilicon production line using trichlorosilane (TCS) purchased from a third-party supplier. The testing was expected to last for up to three weeks and is scheduled to include multiple deposition runs in select polysilicon reactors installed at the Company's Pocatello production facility.

Hoku noted that it had already successfully completed a detailed system commissioning protocol, which included engineering and system verifications, piping system purges, valve and controls testing, system pressurization, reactor power supply and logic testing, and a variety of equipment start-up and casualty control test procedures.

"This is a significant milestone for Hoku Materials," said Scott Paul, president and chief executive officer of Hoku Corporation. "Commencement of this pilot production run marks the beginning of our plant ramp-up and is the result of the collective efforts of our key technical, construction and licensing partners, and the continued support of our customers and vendors. We look forward to transitioning to commercial operations and shipping polysilicon to our customers in the months to come."
