Home Health Monitoring Appliance Improves Patient Confidence in Understanding, Managing Chronic Conditions

Health Buddy® Appliance Survey Shows Almost 9 in 10 Patients Say They Can Better Manage Their Conditions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 12, 2005 -- A survey of 9,732 patients using the Health Buddy appliance from Health Hero Network found that 86 percent say they better understand their medical condition and treatment and are better able to manage their chronic health conditions.

"The results of this survey show that health monitoring systems can be designed to teach people to manage conditions at home," said Steve Brown, CEO of Health Hero Network. "Healthcare starts at home, and patient education in combination with home monitoring is the key to preventing complications that lead to hospitalization."

The survey, delivered periodically to patients via the Health Buddy appliance, also found that 95 percent are satisfied or very satisfied with the appliance and 92 percent will continue to use it if needed. In addition, 92 percent would recommend the appliance to others.

The Health Buddy system provides coaching, monitoring and education for patients with chronic conditions. A countertop appliance is used in the patient's home to provide a daily dialog of questions concerning the patient's condition while enforcing key educational concepts for improved self-care. Care providers receive the responses on a secure website, so they can monitor multiple patients simultaneously and intervene early if a condition is at risk of deteriorating.

The results were collected from Health Buddy appliance surveys taken between January 1, 2003, and September 1, 2005, among Spanish- and English-speaking patients who use the Health Buddy appliance.
