Honoring Earth Day, Sailors for the Sea and SailProud Commit to Saving 180,000 Cubic Inches of Landfill Space and Preventing Nearly Three Tons of CO2 Emissions

Sale of Limited Edition Eco-Friendly T-Shirt -- Made From Recycled Plastic Bottles -- Supports Sailors for the Sea and Protects the Environment

NEWPORT, RI--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) -  Sailors for the Sea, the only ocean conservation nonprofit focused on the sailing and boating community, today joins forces with SailProud, an outdoor apparel company that produces high quality, innovative performance clothing from eco-friendly and recycled materials sourced in the United States, to remove more than 180,000 cubic inches of United States' landfill space near coastal communities and prevent the release of almost three tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

This effort, in honor of Earth Day (April 22, 2010), is supported through the sale of the stylish, limited edition Sailors for the Sea ECO Tee designed and produced by SailProud.

All profits from the sale of the shirts, limited to a total production of 1,000 shirts, will go directly to Sailors for the Sea to help support and fund programs designed to protect and restore ocean and coastal waters. To ensure the production effort is as environmentally friendly and efficient as possible, production of these semi-custom shirts will begin once the preorder period closes on April 22, which will enable one-run production and virtually no excess inventory. By purchasing these shirts -- in lieu of petroleum-based materials -- consumers have immediate impact on protecting the environment and conserving natural resources. Impact benefits include:

  • 1800 kilowatts hours conserved
  • 180,000 cubic inches of landfill space removed
  • 5,500 pounds of CO2 emissions prevents
  • 64 fully-mature trees planted (annual equivalent)

"It has been a thrill to work alongside Sailors for the Sea for this Earth Day campaign," said Philip Tepfer, founder, SailProud. "The shirts we created are stylish and functional, and truly make a difference in the world -- not in a few decades, or even in a couple of years, but today with the reduction of pollutants that are so very damaging to sensitive marine life and their ecosystems. Sailors for the Sea knows this better than most and has been a key partner in taking this from inspiration to reality."

Day In and Day Out Making a Difference
Serving as steward of the environment and supporters of eco-friendly living, SailProud is focused on energy conservation, CO2 emissions reduction, and diminishing landfill/litter through its daily production processes. While the company provides great apparel it also works to protect the environment and save fragile natural eco-systems and their inhabitants.

"SailProud is a unique company and natural Earth Day alliance for Sailors for the Sea," said Dan Pingaro, CEO, Sailors for the Sea. "Their commitment to providing innovative, useful products that protect the environment and support worthy causes, creates the synergy we look for when looking to collaborate with organizations and companies. SailProud's goals of environmental protection, conservation and promoters of an eco-friendly lifestyle are exemplary and honorable. They're a role model for other new and established organizations wondering how to make the world a better place today and for future generations. SailProud gear has a profound, and measurable, effect on the environment."

Benefits Extend from Consumer to Environment
The foundation of the Sailors for the Sea ECO Tee is SailProud's signature EcoWear Tech Tee. The shirts are made from approximately five post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, which are taken directly from landfills throughout the United States, fabricated and combined with organic cotton. Combining these materials avoids the overuse of environmentally damaging cotton. (A typical cotton shirt uses approximately one-third pound of pesticides in the growing process.) The construction and manufacturing is done in the United States saving time and shipping emissions, and SailProud uses only water-based, non-toxic screen printing inks and dyes, which do not produce dangerous runoff.

Besides reducing the amount of wasted landfill space, repurposing the bottles prevents the release of more than 5.5 pounds of carbon emissions, per shirt, and saves enough energy to light a 60-watt lightbulb for six hours.

SailProud shirts are made from a variety of materials each with its own specific benefits and advantages -- wicking sweat and moisture, regulating the evaporative cooling process to keep the wearer cool (or warmer in winter garments), reducing skin friction, inhibiting odor through microbes, and providing a solid 50+ UV protective factor.

When designing apparel, the company's research and design considers all types of environments and conditions, and continually evaluates material options -- such as those from recycled materials (e.g., reclaimed industrial cotton and acrylic waste that is turned to fibers for the company's shirts, or plastic bottles used in the ECOWear Tech Tee cloth). They also consider the ability to use repurposed soy, hemp, bamboo and various other organic substances for SailProud gear.

Tepfer notes, "We continually churn out new blends and fabrics as final developments are made which allows us to expand our product lines to popular and necessary styles. Whether the wearer is lounging on the beach, kayaking down a river, riding some waves, or tacking towards the mark, SailProud Apparel always has them covered."
