Hydro One strike: Massive picket at Markham call centre

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 4, 2005) - Striking Hydro One energy professionals will set up a massive picket line at Hydro One's call centre in Markham today.

"Hydro One's call centre is a harassment centre," said Michelle Byck-Johnston, picket chief for the Society of Energy Professionals. "Employees who show respect for Society picket lines have been threatened with termination. We want to demonstrate in a very positive way that we enjoy wide-ranging support."

The Markham call centre is also staffed by employees of two other companies-Vertex Customer Management, a U.K.-based customer-relationship management firm; and Inergi, an information-technology firm owned by CapGemini of France. These companies perform functions sold to them by Hydro One during the period when Hydro One was to be privatized. The Call Centre handles all inquiries from Hydro One's 1.2 million customers, from large industrial customers to residential ones.

Energy professionals employed by Hydro One have been on strike since June 1st, fighting Hydro One's unfair demands for a two-tier wage and benefit schedule that discriminates against younger professionals, and an effective 11 per cent cut in wages for most employees.

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. on, Monday, July 4th

WHERE: Hydro One Call Centre, 185 Clegg Road (Warden and Highway 7), Markham, Ontario
