Hydro Ottawa Recognizes GE Capital Real Estate for a New Kind of Energy Solution

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 25, 2009) - Already known for innovative energy products and services, GE Capital Real Estate is coming up with some new energy solutions at its own facilities. At their Palladium Drive facilities in Ottawa, GE Capital Real Estate has achieved annual electricity savings of 298,422 kilowatt hours - enough to power 33 homes for a full year. To recognize these results, Hydro Ottawa is handing GE Capital Real Estate this month's Companies for Conservation award.

"It's great to see industry leaders like GE Capital Real Estate raising the bar on energy efficiency and electricity usage in their own facilities," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "GE's creative approach to conservation has been extremely successful in Ottawa, and hopefully these great results will inspire others in the industry to take similar steps to conserve energy."

An energy audit in June of 2007 got the ball rolling on energy-reduction planning at Palladium Drive, where improvements have been made at three different GE Capital Real Estate buildings. Since then, GE Capital Real Estate has installed occupancy sensors and automatic shutoffs for facility lighting, variable-speed drives for cooling fans, and a reworked Building Automation System designed to optimize the building envelope by reducing heat loss during unoccupied hours. At 750 Palladium, the company installed dedicated cooling systems for energy-intensive server rooms; this investment alone allowed GE Capital Real Estate to cut annual electricity usage by 60,000 kilowatt-hours.

In an effort to chart their conservation success, GE Capital Real Estate benchmarks its utility usage each month. The company is currently undergoing a feasibility study with LEED, likely to conclude with a building at Palladium Drive becoming one of the first "LEED-EB" (LEED for Existing Buildings) certified building in Canada. LEED-EB certification is an internationally-recognized system used to rank buildings and facilities by environmental footprint.

"At GE, we take pride in our commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use," said Brenda Schultz, a property manager with GE Capital Real Estate in Canada. "Through innovative internal solutions, we have already started to address global environmental challenges at the workplace level.

The Palladium Drive buildings make up just one of numerous GE Capital Real Estate locations in Ottawa that have achieved great cumulative success with regards to energy conservation. These include facilities on Innovation Road, Queen Street, Hunt Club Road, and Antares Drive.
'Companies for Conservation' is an initiative to celebrate the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October 2007, recognizes one local company or organization for their conservation leadership every month. These companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation.
