Hydro Ottawa Recognizes the Royal Canadian Mint for Their Commitment to Energy Efficiency

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2007) - The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is the second recipient of Hydro Ottawa's 'Companies for Conservation' award, which recognizes conservation leaders in the commercial, industrial and institutional sectors.

Recognizing an opportunity to improve energy efficiency at their flagship facility on Sussex Drive, the Mint developed an extensive energy performance retrofit project with assistance from the Federal Building Initiative (FBI). These well laid plans were executed with the collaboration and expertise of Siemens Canada.

This recently completed $8 million-energy efficiency retrofit is expected to yield energy cost and maintenance savings of up to $1 million annually. The measures taken include a complete heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) replacement, water saving initiatives and building envelope improvements. As a result of these actions, the Mint will reduce yearly utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions - lessening its impact on the environment.

"The Mint is recognized around the world for the 'change' that is manufactured at its historic Sussex Drive facility. Today, we honor the Mint for a different kind of change, which can't be held in your hand or kept in your pocket," said Hydro Ottawa President and CEO Rosemarie T. Leclair. "This change will generate real energy savings and have a very positive impact on the environment. These actions deserve recognition, and I congratulate the Mint for being the second recipient of our 'Companies for Conservation' award."

'Companies for Conservation' is an initiative to celebrate the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October, will recognize one local company or organization for their leadership every month. These select companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation. The inaugural Hydro Ottawa "Companies for Conservation" recipient was the Hudson's Bay Company (Hbc).

"The companies that are recognized by this initiative are leading the pack," said Leclair "By celebrating their efforts, we hope to inspire others to follow suit. Small steps can lead to great bounds."
