ICBO a Success at WesternU

POMONA, CA--(Marketwire - April 13, 2010) -  Professionals from a broad range of health-care fields participated in the 6th annual International Congress of Behavioral Optometry April 8-11 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA, and on the campus of Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA.

Conference attendees -- a total of about 525 from 17 countries, including 100 optometry students representing 10 schools -- sat in on presentations ranging from advances in vision therapy to the fundamental role of vision in cognition, behavior, and social organization, and from managing amblyopia to handling cross-examination questions during a court trial. The April 10 sessions at WesternU included "Vision -- What Has It Done for Me Lately?", "Where is the 'Magic' in Vision Therapy?" and "Diary of an Expert Witness."

ICBO is only held once every four years, and includes professionals from the fields of optometry, psychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, education, neuroscience and others. The 6th International ICBO was sponsored by WesternU, the Optometric Extension Program (OEP) Foundation, and the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association, International (NORA).

WesternU hosted the final day of the Congress in its new $100-million Health Education Center, which includes the College of Optometry's administrative offices and clinical skills lab.

Robert A. Williams, executive director of the OEP Foundation and administrator of NORA, described the conference as a "phenomenal, world-class education." Past conference locales have included Australia, Monaco, and Versailles, France, and Williams was pleased to add Pomona to that list. "We have had successive successes with our conferences over the past 20 years -- each one has been better than the previous one," he said.

Don Fong, OD, president of NORA, was attending his first ICBO and praised its organization and content. "There's a lot of practical info, lots of little gems you can take away and use. I like the gems."

The 7th International Congress of Behavioral Optometry is scheduled to take place in Oxford, England, in 2014, and will be sponsored by the British Association of Behavioural Optometrists.
