IKECA Creates Canadian Council

ROCKVILLE, MD--(Marketwire - December 3, 2009) - The International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association (IKECA) has announced the launch of its new Canadian Council. The IKECA Canadian Council consists of all Active IKECA Members located within the geographic boundaries of Canada and its provinces.

IKECA created the Canadian Council in response to the growth of its Canadian membership and to address concerns of Canadian members on issues that are specific to the Canadian market. In the U.S., fire and regulatory authorities rely almost exclusively on National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and International Code Council (ICC) standards to guide their codes and regulations. Each of the 13 Canadian provinces and territories adopts NFPA standards, but there remain significant variances between U.S. and Canadian requirements. One goal of the Council is to help harmonize standards throughout Canada. Other goals include:

-- Actively address needs of members operating in Canada
-- Review, recommend and execute programs, policies and alliances that
    benefit Canadian Members
-- Promote the IKECA brand, standards and certification to Canadian
    contractors, AHJs and municipalities
-- Develop opportunities for Canadian members including certification and
    continuing education programs

"The organization of the Canadian Council is an extraordinary opportunity to increase the outreach and benefits of IKECA to contractors and fire officials in Canada. It provides a platform for Canadian members of IKECA to develop programs and projects specific to their market and to have a unified voice on the importance of proper cleaning, inspection and maintenance of commercial kitchen exhaust systems," said William Doherty of Pressure Kleen Services Company, Inc. of Toronto. Doherty, an Active Member of IKECA almost since the inception of the organization 20 years ago, was elected as the first IKECA Canadian Council President.

IKECA's growth outside its traditional U.S. membership has been significant in recent years. In addition to its strong Canadian constituency, IKECA has members in Australia, Bermuda, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

"It truly is an honor to extend the reach of the association in an international direction. We hope to make our Canadian Council a model for other countries where there are like-minded companies concerned about the protection of life and property who can associate and work to their mutual benefit," said James Roberts, IKECA President.

The International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association is a 20-year old U.S. non-profit 501 (c)(6) corporation headquartered in Rockville, MD. IKECA is accredited as a Standards Development Organization by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). IKECA's voluntary certification program form the basis of some municipal licensing programs, including those governed by the City of Boston and state of Massachusetts.
