ISO Installation Services Recognizes Important First Step in Waste Diversion

Carpet named as a Waste Diversion priority, signalling a need for a recycling solution

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 20, 2009) - ISO Installation Services (ISO) – Canada's only national flooring installation and removal network – today applauds the announcement by Ontario's Minister of the Environment to include carpet in a forthcoming five-year waste diversion list. The list will be a comprehensive inventory of products to be designated for diversion from Ontario landfills under the Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste category.

"Every year, approximately 600 million pounds of commercial and residential carpet go to landfill in Canada," said Mike Clements, President and COO, ISO. "This carpeting, made from polypropylene, polyester, and nylon (N6 and N6,6), ends up sitting in our landfills, for hundreds of years, emitting toxic off gases and threatening our environment."

By including carpet on the Ontario Waste Diversion List, Minister John Gerretsen will recognize the significant issue carpet waste represents. ISO is committed to offering the Ontario government and the public a comprehensive recycling solution, which is integral to successfully achieving the government's important and challenging waste diversion goals.

"ISO's goal is to divert carpet from landfills and ensure that the recovered fibre and backing is recycled for use in new carpets and alternative products," said Clements. "We are currently exploring technologies and facilities to provide the capacity to divert from landfill and recycle the majority of carpet removed from residential and commercial applications in Ontario, and indeed in Canada. In fact, we think major diversion of carpet can and should happen sooner than five years and we will be encouraging the government to require carpet recycling within two years."
