Ice Skating Is the Healthy Way for Kids to Enjoy Winter!

Healthy Kids Fest at the Blue Cross RiverRink Saturday, January 12, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwire - January 3, 2008) - Looking for a way to spend quality time with the family and a healthy way to enjoy winter? Turn off the gadgets, get off the couch and head down to the Blue Cross RiverRink and enjoy a fun filled day of ice skating outdoors.

The Independence Blue Cross Annual HEALTHY KIDS FEST celebrates ways for kids to have fun that are also good for them. With panoramic views of the Delaware River, Philadelphia City Skyline and the majestic Benjamin Franklin Bridge, ice skating at the Blue Cross RiverRink is the perfect outdoor activity for exercising this winter. The celebration will take place on Saturday, January 12 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Blue Cross RiverRink at Penn's Landing on Columbus Boulevard at Market Street.

HEALTHY KIDS FEST will feature information and tips for moms, dads, and kids on how to stay healthy during the winter months. There will be interactive games, fitness demonstrations from exercise expert, Don Baxter, from Independence Blue Cross, and useful free information from Independence Blue Cross about nutrition and healthy eating.

St. Christopher's Hospital Healthy Weight Awareness Center will also be on site distributing information about the benefits of a healthy diet and physical activity. In response to the nation's current childhood obesity epidemic, the Healthy Weight Awareness Center at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children offers a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary program for children at risk or already affected by co-morbid conditions associated with being overweight. The Healthy Weight Awareness Center identifies potential weight problems in children and adolescents and determines medical, and possibly surgical treatments, to suit each patient's needs. "The best treatment for obesity is early recognition and intervention at a younger age," said Dr. Kathy Chen, pediatric gastroenterologist and medical director, Healthy Weight Awareness Center.

Representatives from the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, sponsored by St. Christopher's Foundation for Children, will also be on hand with information about children's dental health. Traveling throughout our neighborhoods, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile's mission is to tend to the oral health of Philadelphia's children, providing dental screening and care for children. The program serves as a conduit between families and local dental clinics, and forges important partnerships with other community-stabilizing organizations.

A party room inside the heated facility will be transformed into a workout center or mini-gym, sponsored by Bally's Total Fitness. The staff of Bally's Total Fitness will be present for exercise instruction, fitness demonstrations, displaying fitness equipment and providing information on how to stay active all year long.

B101 radio and personality Nancy Tolino will visit the Blue Cross RiverRink as part of this event celebrating healthy kids. They will have crafts and special giveaways along with their mascot Buzzbee.

NBC's "Biggest Loser" contestant, Nicole, will also make a special appearance and talk about her experience of losing an amazing 105 pounds.

Healthy Snacking can build healthy kids, so there will be free samples of FUZE beverages provided by the Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company, milk and cheese samples from Cabot Creamery, and other healthy snacks, courtesy of ACME.

Added to the entertainment will be FREE activities including face-painting and make-and-take crafts. The giant video wall inside the heated facility adjacent to the rink will feature family friendly fitness videos, including highlights from sponsor, NBC 10's, Fit Fest.

Fun fitness games will include: "Better Body Bingo" in which the first person to match the foods on the Better Body Bingo Cards to create the proper meal, will win a prize. Another game will be "If You Must Snack," allowing participants to compare snacks as they are quizzed on the better snack choices. There will be a variety of games set up for kids to try, designed specifically to increase coordination and promote good sportsmanship.
