Illegal US Immigration is Reducing, but Illegal Workers Still Slip Through the Net

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 3, 2010) - The recession has affected illegal US immigration to such an extent that the number of undocumented immigrants living in the United States without a valid US visa dropped by almost a million between 2008 and 2009, according to the Homeland Security Office of Immigration Statistics. As large numbers of illegal immigrants are Mexican, it is likely that many have returned home due to the poor economic outlook in America.

At the same time, research company Westat has questioned the effectiveness of E-Verify. This is the government system which 180,000 American employers use voluntarily to check the entitlement of applicants to work in the United States, and is integral to the Obama administration's plans for immigration reform. Westat's research shows that E-Verify is unable to detect identity fraud and consequently wrongly clears illegal workers to work in the USA in about fifty-four percent of cases. Thus workers who have managed to bypass US immigration requirements are still able to work in the USA without a US visa. There are some planned changes to E-Verify to prevent the fraudulent use of documents, but these will take time.

Republican politicians are pressing the administration to tighten up on illegal US immigration, while many Democrats are arguing for an amnesty on illegal immigrants. Either way, immigration is a hot political issue in the USA, and these developments indicate that obtaining a US visa legitimately is the only sure route to being able to work and remain in the United States.

Liam Clifford, of world leading immigration company Global Visas commented, "With E-Verify being called into doubt, and fewer illegal immigrants in the country, we can expect the US immigration authorities and the administration to focus on tightening up on the employment of illegal immigrants and their immigration status."
