Illinois State Class Donates Proceeds From Vector Marketing/Cutco Sales to Homes of Hope

NORMAL, IL--(Marketwire - February 1, 2010) -  A junior/senior level sales class in The Professional Sales Institute of Illinois State University recently donated more than $7,500 of commissions from the sale of Cutco cutlery to Homes of Hope located in Normal, Illinois. The cutlery was sold by Vector Marketing (www.campusrelations.com), the sole distributor of Cutco, which trained the students.

The check for $7,634.34 was presented December 8, 2009 by several of the class's top students who attended the organization's annual holiday banquet. The announcement was made by Dr. Jill Attaway, professor in Illinois State's Professional Sales Institute's Department of Marketing, who teaches this experiential learning program, known as "Selling Smiles."

Homes of Hope, Inc. is a non-profit corporation that provides quality homes and support services, promoting optimal independence, community inclusion and personal satisfaction to adults with developmental disabilities regardless of social, racial, cultural or religious affiliation. Homes of Hope currently maintains three homes dedicated to providing Christian residential living for those in need.

"On behalf of Homes of Hope, I would like to thank Dr. Jill Attaway and her marketing class students for the sales work that they did and choosing Homes of Hope as their recipient," said Maureen McIntosh, executive director of Homes of Hope. "The Homes of Hope residents got to meet the students and were a part of ISU activities. We appreciate the donation as well as allowing our residents to be part of their college lives."

Seventy-five students from Attaway's Personal Selling & Relationship Marketing class participated to produce more than 560 sales appointments during the course of the semester to both B2C and B2B customers. All together, the students exceeded $21,000 in sales for the semester.

Attaway has expanded the program started by Professor Mike Williams, former director of The Professional Sales Institute, who introduced the Cutco program into his courses about 8 years ago. The Cutco-Vector sales experience has been an integral part of the selling program at ISU and was piloted for the Personal Selling & Relationship Marketing course which is one of the required courses for those students pursuing a major in Professional Sales.

Students enrolled in the Fall 2009 sections of the course participated in the nationally known Vector Marketing sales training program, which teaches them a wide range of skills, including:

  • Building immediate rapport with customers
  • Setting/achieving goals
  • Understanding consumer behavior
  • Time management
  • Demonstrating product advantages
  • Overcoming objections
  • Assisting customers with service requests
  • Building self-confidence
  • Team building
  • Communications skills

"We feel that Cutco-Vector is the perfect company to align with for this sales course," said Attaway. "For nearly the entire 60-year history of the company, its sales force has been comprised almost exclusively of college students who sell its products through in-home personal demonstrations. By selling Cutco, the students are able to go beyond the theory of the classroom and gain invaluable real-world experience.

"Donating their commissions to Homes of Hope has also been extremely rewarding for the students," said Attaway. "It provided them with an important incentive to sell, knowing that they would be giving back to such a worthy cause."
