Independent Study Finds Enterprises Seek Better Information Quality, Strategic Advantage Through Rapid Data Governance Adoption

Data Governance Emerges as Key Requirement for Master Data Management and Data Quality Initiatives

BURLINGTON, MA--(Marketwire - August 24, 2010) -

  • A new study released today by The Information Difference, an independent analyst firm, finds that data governance is growing faster than previously forecast and is increasingly seen as a prerequisite for effective master data management (MDM) and data quality programs. The study also identified a well-defined need for purpose-built data governance solutions to replace an assortment of ad hoc tools currently in use.

  •  "How Data Governance Links Master Data Management and Data Quality" was co-sponsored by Kalido and is available for free download in the Kalido Data Governance Resource Center.

  • The online survey of 257 business and technology professionals, the majority from $1B+ companies, found:

    • Seventy-one percent have implemented a data governance program or plan to within one year; 30 percentage points more than when The Information Difference asked this question in a 2008 study. One reason for the marked increase is that enterprises better understand the strategic advantages data governance can deliver.

    • Seventy-nine percent of study participants with active data governance programs viewed those programs as successful.

    • Seventy-nine percent of respondents with an active data governance program said it is imperative to have a program in place prior to or in conjunction with implementing data quality or MDM programs. An even larger number of those planning to undertake data governance (88 percent) agree.

    • The top two motivations for implementing data governance were better, faster decision-making and the ability to more effectively respond to business change.

    • Of the companies that have data governance programs in place, nearly one third have custom-built tools to support data governance, while 39 percent rely on email, spreadsheets and intranets. The study's author calls these approaches insufficient, citing that data governance requires functionality not provided by MDM and data quality tools alone.

  • Dr. David Waddington, senior vice president and co-founder, The Information Difference:

"Three key findings in our study rise above the others: Data governance is maturing much faster than forecast; MDM and data quality have a greater chance of success when a data governance program is in place; and the data governance market is under-served by technology providers. Clear advances have been made in data governance. Programs have moved from planning to implementation and are delivering real results. The introduction of applications for automating and managing data governance programs should dramatically accelerate uptake and rollout over the next 12 months."

  • Winston Chen, senior vice president, strategy and business development, Kalido:

"The Information Difference study confirms our prediction that data governance adoption would increase rapidly and that organizations would demand the right enabling technology. In the two months since we introduced Kalido Data Governance Director, we've been delighted by the enthusiasm from the market. Our Lighthouse Customer Program is over-subscribed. We're convinced that Kalido Data Governance Director is the only built-for-purpose product that meets the urgent and growing need for data governance technology."
