Industry Canada Named Among the National Capital Region's Top Employers for 2010

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 23, 2009) - Industry Canada announced today that it has been selected as one of Canada's top 25 employers in the National Capital Region by editors of the well-known Canada's Top 100 Employers competition. This special designation recognizes companies and organizations in the Ottawa region that lead their sectors in offering an exceptional place to work. The results were published in today's Ottawa Citizen newspaper.

"I am proud of this recognition of excellence in the public service of Canada and of the exceptional career opportunities and workplace we have at Industry Canada," said the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry.

Industry Canada's selection was based on a detailed review of its operations and human resources practices in eight key areas: physical workplace; work and social atmosphere; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement. In choosing the finalists, the editors considered how each employer compared to others in its industry and region to determine which offer the most progressive programs.

"I am pleased to see our exceptional work environment publicly recognized," explained Richard Dicerni, Deputy Minister, Industry Canada. "When you look at the important work we're engaged in, you start to see why our employees get satisfaction from their work and do an excellent job of it."

Industry Canada recruits over 130 new employees each year from outside of the federal public service and has been promoting its interesting opportunities and mandate through its Work That Matters campaign (

"Managing our people well is something that we all share responsibility for," said Bill James, Director General of Human Resources. "We're happy to know that our managers and employees are doing a lot of the right things to attract and retain talented colleagues, and especially since it has been confirmed by a third party."

Industry Canada is proud to have been short-listed for this year's national award. Detailed results can be reviewed on Canada's Top 100 Employers website (
