Infonetics Research: Finisar takes lead from JDSU in ROADM component (WSS) market in 2H09

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - March 30, 2010) -  Market research firm Infonetics Research (http://twitter.com/infonetics) released the first edition of its 2010 ROADM Components report, which tracks the Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer optical network equipment market, measuring wavelength selective switch (WSS) components by spacing technology and degree-count.

ANALYST NOTE
"Since the launch of Infonetics' wavelength selective switch component reporting, JDSU had been the market share leader, but in the second half of 2009, Finisar took the lead based on the strength of its 50GHz WSS shipments (JDSU still leads for the full year 2009). The transition from 100GHz to 50GHz channel spacing is accelerating, with the 50GHz segment expected to account for all future revenue and unit growth in the WSS market. With Finisar, JDSU, Capella, CoAdna and others now fielding qualified 50GHz WSS components, competition is becoming fierce," explains Andrew Schmitt, Infonetics Research's directing analyst for optical.

ROADM COMPONENT MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • While the overall optical equipment revenue grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8% since 2002, WDM ROADM-based optical equipment revenue increased at a CAGR of 46% between 2005 and 2009
  • The WDM ROADM optical equipment market will remain the fastest growing segment of the optical equipment business, and the key component fueling growth is the wavelength selective switch (WSS), which allows wavelength route provisioning to become dynamic and protection switching to take place at the optical layer rather than the electrical layer
  • Worldwide revenue is forecast by Infonetics to nearly double between 2009 and 2010 for 50GHz WSS components with 1x5 or more port degree counts
    • Telecom service providers are looking for tighter channel spacing to increase fiber capacity and ensure compatibility with cutting-edge WDM solutions, and want larger degree counts to provide greater flexibility as they design their networks

REPORT SYNOPSIS

Infonetics' biannual ROADM Components report provides market size, market share, forecasts, and in-depth analysis on WSS components (revenue and units), with added historical and current ROADM optical equipment market size and share for a big-picture view of the market. The report provides WSS component pricing trends, supplier size, ASP forecast, deployment models, and market drivers and trends.

The report tracks ROADM WSS components in 4 discrete categories: 1x4 or fewer add/drop ports at 100GHz and 50GHz channel spacing, and 1x5 or more add/drop ports at 100GHz and 50GHz.

WSS component manufacturers tracked: Capella, CoAdna, Finisar, JDSU, Neophotonics, Nistica, Oclaro, Xtellus, others. ROADM optical equipment market share is included for ADVA, Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Cisco, ECI, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Infinera, NEC, Nokia Siemens, Nortel, Tellabs, Transmode, others.
