Information Security Product Review Recommends IT Security Managers Consider Aventail SSL VPN for Remote Access

Magazine Review Highlights Aventail's EX-1500's "Robust Security Features, Application Support and Easy Administration"

SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 15, 2005 -- "The Aventail EX-1500 SSL VPN appliance deserves serious consideration as a replacement to IPSec and a space in the enterprise security appliance rack," Information Security magazine wrote in a review published in the September 2005 issue of the magazine. The review highlighted Aventail's "robust security features, application support, and easy administration."

The Information Security review is the latest in a series of accolades for the Aventail EX-1500, which combines the robust transport capabilities of IPSec with the granular application control of SSL. The review particularly emphasized Aventail's Smart Tunneling technology, a patent-pending Layer 3 connection that enables full network application access with complete policy control and security.

"Smart Tunneling provides a network layer connection for robust and secure transport, and moves up the stack, bringing more granularity to policy and access control not only for HTTP and Web-based e-mail apps, but client/server TCP apps such as MS Exchange," the review noted. In addition, the review detailed Smart Tunneling's ability to support a wide range of functions, including videoconferencing, streaming media, VoIP, Active FTP, remote control apps, and more. The review emphasized Smart Tunneling's ability to alleviate NAT traversal issues commonly encountered with IPSec clients behind firewalls.

Aventail's ability to enforce access based on security policy and support multiple zones of trust based on the remote device's level of risk also received mention in the review. Aventail is the only SSL VPN to provide multiple Policy Zones for a highly granular access control policy based on user identity, security state of the end device, and resources.

"In our lab, we set up separate zones for trusted and untrusted devices. At logon, the EX-1500 attempts to match 'fingerprints' to those defined by policy. Our Palm device and public PC were denied access to critical Web apps and file shares because they didn't have the requisite security apps," the review explained.

Information Security detailed many other Aventail features that provide ease of management and greater control for administrators, including flexible authentication and authorization features. "Enterprises will enjoy the flexibility of authentication and authorization, including server- or client-side digital certificates and passwords, and support for RSA SecurID, Active Directory, LDAP, and RADIUS," the review stated.
