Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario: Six Toronto Students Earn Honours in Canada-Wide CA Exam

245 local students pass one of the world's most challenging professional exams

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 7, 2009) - Six Toronto Chartered Accounting students have achieved top marks on one of the world's most challenging professional entry examinations. According to the results of the Uniform Evaluation (UFE), a national accounting examination, Erik Arnold, James Brooks, Jordan Giblett, Lauren Ho, Marion Lai Wun Ma and Matthew Unruh earned places on the prestigious National Honour Roll - the listing of the top 51 students in the country.

The UFE, written in September, is a national three-day evaluation that assesses competencies including essential knowledge, professional judgment, ethics and the ability to communicate. The UFE is an important component of the CA qualification program, which includes prescribed education, practical experience and examination requirements. Only those who complete this entire program successfully are entitled to use the internationally recognized designation of Chartered Accountant, a profession known for superior financial expertise, strategic thinking, business insight and leadership.

Erik Arnold has a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen's and articles with KPMG LLP in Toronto. On why he chose the profession, Mr. Arnold said: "My dad and my brother are both Chartered Accountants and were big inspirations and I saw firsthand the may opportunities that the CA offered. It was a logical and advantageous career path."

James Brooks has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Ottawa and articles at KPMG LLP in Toronto. Mr. Brooks said: "I had a pretty unusual source of inspiration for studying for the UFE. During are UFE prep, former Montreal Canadiens' coach Scotty Bowman came into KPMG in Toronto and gave us a pep talk. He called achieving the UFE our profession's Stanley Cup. It really inspired me and I even grew a playoff beard during the run up to the UFE."

Jordan Giblett has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and articles at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Toronto. On how he approached taking the UFE, Mr. Giblett said: ""My advice to future writers is that confidence and staying calm going into the exam is key. I found that taking the time to relax and hang out with my close friends and family was important in between studying. You need that time to recharge and take your mind off the whole process. I think confidence comes from sticking to your study plan and knowing that you've done everything you could to prepare yourself, whatever the outcome might be."

Lauren Ho has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from York University and articles at Deloitte & Touche LLP in Toronto. On why she chose the profession, Ms. Ho said: "My Dad is a CA, so I knew all of the things that a CA could do and that the profession is not solely accounting. That flexibility was attractive to me. My Dad always told me that the harder I worked, the luckier I would get. I feel very lucky."

Marion Ma has a Master of Accounting degree from the University of Waterloo and articles at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Mississauga. "I chose the CA career as the result of the Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy program that I was enrolled in at the University of Waterloo. Although I had a choice between science and accounting, my first internship in a laboratory cemented my desire for a career as a CA as that is what I would enjoy the most," she said. "While studying for the UFE, my goal was to get on the Honour Roll so I was very happy when I found out that I had achieved that goal. In the future, I would like to either make Partner or the CFO of a large pharmaceutical corporation."

Matthew Unruh has an Honours in Business Administration degree from the University of Western Ontario and articles at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Toronto. He said: "I was interested in becoming a Chartered Accountant because of the many career opportunities, and the fact that you are instantly recognized as a financial professional. As I gain experience, I plan to stay in finance with an eye to eventually becoming a partner or a CFO."

In total, Ontario had a record 1,363 successful UFE writers and captured 20 of 51 National Honour roll spots. Jacob Bell of Pickering captured the Ontario Gold Medal as the top writer of the Uniform Evaluation (UFE) in the province.

The following other Toronto CA students successfully wrote the exam and, upon completion of their 30-month experience requirement, will have earned the right to add the letters CA to their names:
