Internet Information Services 6 Overtakes Apache to Serve More Fortune 1000 Web Sites in New Port80 Software Survey

New Results Highlight Microsoft's Leadership in Enterprise Web Site and Application Serving With IIS and ASP.NET

SAN DIEGO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 11, 2006 -- Port80 Software, a Microsoft Certified Partner, has surveyed the public Web sites of Fortune 1000 companies since 2003 to determine their use of Internet and application hosting technologies. In a survey released today, the Microsoft Internet Information Services 6 Web server (IIS 6) passed Apache, the popular open source Web server, for the first time. With 27.0% market share, IIS 6 penetration has more than doubled in the past year and will soon overcome IIS 5 to be the most widely deployed Fortune 1000 Web server. Overall, IIS 4, 5, and 6 deployments continue to lead with a combined 54.9% share of all Fortune 1000 corporate sites versus Apache's 23.3% share.

Not surprisingly given the prominence of IIS 5 and 6, Microsoft ASP.NET application server environments are also currently used on 48.4% of Fortune 1000 sites. Other application servers like Java platforms (J2EE, JSP, WebLogic, WebSphere, and Tomcat), PHP, and ColdFusion all combined to account for only 21.2% of Fortune 1000 site deployments.

"We believe that IIS with ASP.NET is the most secure, reliable, and scalable Web server environment on the market, and that's evidenced by the large enterprises of the Fortune 1000 who are betting their businesses on it," said Brian Goldfarb, group product manager of the Web Platform and Tools Marketing Group at Microsoft Corp. "As part of the upcoming Windows Server 'Longhorn' launch, Microsoft will deliver even more value with the release of IIS 7. This new Web server is designed for industry partners such as Port80 Software to develop more powerful modules, extending IIS functionality for our shared customers."

For the last three years, the Port80 Software surveys have been challenging conventional wisdom about how leading corporations actually use Web technologies. "The rapid adoption of IIS 6 among Fortune 1000 companies underscores Microsoft's leadership in the corporate market," said Joseph Lima, Director of Product Development at Port80 Software. "Our company is fully focused on developing the best software solutions to secure, accelerate, and enhance Microsoft's Web platform." Port80 Software will offer compatible versions of its products in 2007 to take advantage of the new extensibility model in IIS 7 on Windows Server "Longhorn," Microsoft's successor to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2.
