Is This The End Of The Black Cab As We Know It?

FLINT, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 30, 2009) - The traditional London Hackney Cab could be on its way out, to be replaced by a new model by German manufacturer Mercedes Benz, according to commercial vehicle insurance specialists Staveley Head.

Launched in 2007, the Vito Taxi now has a 25% share of the London Taxi market, with Mercedes having sold 400 of the models in the last year. It is estimated that this new taxi, which offers 28mpg, as opposed to the 20mpg offered by the current TX4 London cab, will increase its market share over the coming years. This is despite the TX4 being the preferred choice of most cab drivers.

The Vito is equipped with a range of features, including independent air conditioning and electric side doors. According to the manufacturer, it offers "unprecedented levels of comfort and efficiency; and it is supplied as standard with the prestige, reliability, safety and cost-effectiveness that you expect from Mercedes-Benz."

The Vito also conforms to the Conditions of Fitness set out in January 2007 by the PCO (Public Carriage Office) and has been adapted to meet the CoF (Conditions of Fitness) turning circle requirement, making it a highly attractive option for taxi firms.

Based in Flintshire, North Wales, Staveley Head are one of the UK's leading providers of taxi and private hire insurance. This panel means that the firm can offer the most appropriate cover for clients, at the most affordable prices. A spokesperson commented:

"The black cab has long as synonymous with London as the Double Decker bus and red post boxes so the news that it could be replaced will anger traditionalists. In some respects, it is indeed sad that such an iconic vehicle is being ousted by a new rival. However, this is clearly a superior vehicle which offers excellent safety features and comfort for passengers, as well as improved fuel economy for drivers."
