Is an Uncertain Economy Forcing Americans to Work Harder?

America's Job Exchange Survey Provides Insight Into Workplace Trends

ANDOVER, MA--(Marketwire - May 1, 2008) - Are employees overworked -- or is a potentially sluggish economy pressuring employers to do more with less? Those were the answers America's Job Exchange, Inc. (AJE) was seeking in a series of online polls that surveyed site visitors on questions such as "How many hours per week do you work? What are you looking forward to most this year? And, how much vacation did you take last summer?"

AJE (, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NaviSite, Inc. (NASDAQ: NAVI) and a leading online career management portal for job seekers interested in non-executive, middle-income jobs, reported the following results, based on more than 5,000 responses from users who participated in a series of poll questions:

--  Most Americans reported their top career priority in 2008 was to get a
    new job - landing a new job was the goal of 64 percent of the
    respondents, 17 percent were focused on a work-life balance, 10 percent
    intended to go back to school and only 8 percent indicated that they
    were going to take up new challenges at their current workplace.

--  Americans are taking little time off - nearly half, 45 percent, stated
    that they took no vacation last summer, 19 percent took less than a
    week, 22 percent took between 1 and 2 week's vacation, and only 12
    percent took two weeks or more week's vacation.

--  Concerns over the economy may also be impacting time spent on the job
    - although 32 percent stated they were not currently employed and
    looking for work, about a third of the respondents, 30 percent, said
    they were working 41 to 60 hours a week, and 6 percent spent more than
    60 hours on the clock.

"These polls give us valuable insight into the dynamics of the workplace," said Rathin Sinha, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer for NaviSite. "Although we don't know to what extent economic concerns are affecting the work-habits of the average, middle-income worker, we see some interesting trends that help us provide useful career-related content and job search services to assist job-seekers and employers in a tough economy."
