Job Outlook for the Class of 2010: Very Bleak but There Are Always Jobs Out There -- 75,119 to Be Exact

NEW ORLEANS, LA--(Marketwire - January 8, 2010) - Over 150 employers are making 9,834 campus visits to make 75,119 new hires. Employers recruiting from the Class of 2010 are projecting the lowest numbers of hires in several decades. This is according to Dr. Philip Gardner, director of the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University, in his annual Recruiting Trends survey of 2,500 employers. Dr. Gardner used his survey results as the basis for his article, "Job Outlook for the Class of 2010" to be published in the Second Semester Super Issue of THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Magazine. According to Dr. Gardner, while 27 percent of respondents had definite plans to hire college graduates, the majority were more cautious. "Still among the wreckage, opportunities are emerging for college graduates this year. Not as many as needed, but a young adult seeking work with the depth and breadth of skills an employer needs will be in a position to capitalize on opportunities that come available," Gardner writes.

In considering what another employment guru, Richard Nelson Bolles, said in "The Job Hunter's Survival Guide," "There are always jobs out there." THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Magazine developed two resources for the class of 2010: "The Mother Lode of Career Opportunities," a listing of employers actively recruiting on campus, and "The Listing of Top 100 Employers of the Class of 2010." At the top of the Top 100 Employers List are Enterprise Rent-A-Car, projecting 8,000 hires; Verizon, projecting 7,000; and Peace Corps, projecting 5,973. These projections seem to substantiate Dr. Gardner's assertions that "...opportunities appear to be emerging for college graduates..." The top 20 employers on the Top 100 Employers list are:

The complete list of the Top 100 Employers is attached. The 156 employers that participated in the survey are making 9,834 campus visits to make 75,119 new hires. So while Bolles is right in saying there are always jobs out there, Gardner says "...there is going to be a lot of competition for each one of these positions." The employers that are hiring at this time are giving graduating seniors a glimmer of hope in a very distressful period in their young lives. These companies are at the forefront of the jobs recovery and are considered to be stable, "employers of choice" - the best of the best.
