JustAskGemalto Talks Identity Theft Protection on Social Networks

CSIdentity's Bill Morrow and Powered's Aaron Strout Discuss Identity Theft, Social Media, and How to Protect Yourself

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - August 27, 2010) -  Did you know that the identities of more than 495 million Americans have been breached over the last five years (privacyrights.org)? How do individuals ensure protection from digital identity theft?

Bill Morrow is the Chairman and CEO of CSIdentity, an Austin-based technology leader in Identity Theft Protection, Voice Biometrics, ID Verification, and Data Breach Management. Morrow explains how the identity theft epidemic is the fastest growing crime today with the highest criminal reward and lowest risk. With over 10 million reported identities stolen every year in the United States alone, damages from fraud are estimated at $54 billion (Javelin 2009).

Aaron Strout is the Chief Marketing Officer for Powered, an Austin-based social media agency that focuses on helping companies make the transition into online and social media. He stresses the importance of exercising common sense about what personal information you share with the online community.

Identity thieves are using highly sophisticated techniques to steal personal information, including phishing schemes that masquerade as legitimate social media messages and requests to trick users to click on malicious links. What can people do to stay safe?

Morrow and Strout recommend some simple tips:

  • Use a screen lock on mobile devices to keep personal data secure
  • Change online passwords frequently
  • On social networking sites, don't assume a person is who they say are
  • Be cautious about posting your whereabouts, especially when you are away from home, when using social location applications

Morrow stated that cyber gangs are constantly changing their tactics and consumers need to raise their level of awareness to protect themselves and their families. While identity theft is not 100% preventable, it's absolutely possible to significantly mitigate its negative consequences.
