KARE 11 News Reporter and Photographer Win National Emmy

MINNEAPOLIS, MN--(Marketwire - September 25, 2007) - KARE 11 reporter Boyd Huppert and photographer John Drilling were honored by the National Association for Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) at a ceremony in New York City Monday night. They were awarded a National News Emmy for their story Kaziah: Art of Compassion. The story details the life of a Utah artist who honors American soldiers killed in Iraq by painting their portraits for the soldiers' families.

The story originally appeared on KARE 11 News during November 2006. NBC ran the story in it's entirety on the NBC Today Show on May 17, 2007. That broadcast qualified the piece to compete as a national news story in the Outstanding Feature Story in a Scheduled News Show category. It won over nominated stories from ABC and CBS network news shows.

"There are many things we do in the course of a day at KARE 11," said Tom Lindner, Vice President News Director, "but telling stories with compassion, skill and beautiful video is our mission. We're very proud of Boyd and John," he added.

"National awards provide a wonderful moment to celebrate some of our best work," said John Remes, President and General Manager of KARE. "But the day-to-day work this staff does to tell the stories of this community is also a great accomplishment. We thank Boyd and John for their excellent work and for turning the spotlight on the unique journalism of KARE 11."

Kaziah: Art of Compassion will be rebroadcast Wednesday night (9/26) during KARE 11 News at 10. It can be seen anytime at

Boyd Huppert has reported at KARE 11 since 1996. John Drilling joined the staff in 1996 as well.
