Katahdin Paper Company Launches Baxter Book New Publishing Paper Targets Book Applications

SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE--(Marketwire - Feb. 10, 2010) - Katahdin Paper Company LLC ("Katahdin" or the "Company") announced today the launch of a new specialty publishing grade, Baxter Book, targeted for tradebook and educational workbook applications. The new product is engineered with 40% on-site processed recycled fiber, high opacity and consistent pressroom runnability.

"We asked leading publishers about product gaps in the market and, unanimously, they asked for book papers designed to the highest sustainability standards," said Matt Nightingale, Vice President, Marketing of Fraser Papers Inc., which manages Katahdin. "Baxter Book is a strong, sustainable choice for applications that require bulk, opacity and consistency. Our hallmark customer service and technical support, combined with an efficient supply chain to the print market in the Northeastern United States, provides unique value for our customers."

Baxter Book is manufactured at the Company's integrated operations in East Millinocket, Maine. The operations are energy self-sufficient and source all major raw materials from the United States, resulting in a stable cost structure with efficient and consistent papermaking processes, and delivering optimum paper performance, caliper uniformity, basis weight control, and an added benefit of higher opacity.

Katahdin has built a differentiated sustainability platform: a low carbon foot print generating nearly 100% of its energy through an on-site biomass boiler and hydroelectricity; an on-site de-inking facility processing one million pounds of recycled papers a day; a portfolio of green papers including the capability to produce paper with high recycled fiber content; and FSC certification.

Baxter Book is available in brightness levels 60, 65 and 70, basis weights 33 and 35 lb., a choice of shade (white or cream) and FSC certification upon request. The new product joins the family of lightweight uncoated groundwood papers that includes Baxter Brite, a versatile ultra-lightweight publishing paper, and Baxter Lite, a specialized directory paper.
