Kayne Anderson Energy Total Return Fund Announces Its Net Asset Value at July 31, 2006

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 1, 2006 --Kayne Anderson Energy Total Return Fund, Inc. (the "Fund") (NYSE: KYE) today announced its net asset value at July 31, 2006.

At July 31, 2006, the Fund's net assets were $821 million and its net asset value per share was $26.12 based on 31.4 million shares outstanding. The Fund's common stock closed on the NYSE on July 31, 2006 at $24.69. On this date, the Fund's discount to NAV was approximately 5.5%. The Fund's Stock Repurchase Program expired at the close of business July 31, 2006, as of which date the Fund had repurchased 764,275 shares of its common stock for a total cost of $17.6 million, or an average price of $23.08 per share.

Equity and fixed income investments were 87% and 13%, respectively, of the Fund's total long-term investments of $1.1 billion as of July 31, 2006. Long-term investments were comprised of MLPs and MLP Affiliates (49%), Canadian Royalty Trusts (27%), Marine Energy Transportation (9%), Coal Companies (6%) and U.S. Royalty Trusts and Other Energy Companies (9%). At July 31, 2006, the Fund's total assets were $1.1 billion.
