Kelvin's Space Ranch, Science Alberta Foundation's Newest Online Educational Game, Now Available on iPhone and iTouch

Award-Winning Science Organization Looks to the Future With New Educational Game for Children

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Aug. 17, 2010) - Science Alberta Foundation (SAF) is pleased to announce that one of its flagship children's online educational games, Kelvin's Space Ranch, is now available as an iTouch and iPhone application. The game, aimed at teaching children about agricultural science, is currently available for download free of charge on iTunes.

"Our goal with Kelvin's Space Ranch was to create an innovative and engaging activity for children to learn about the extensive role science plays in their everyday lives, particularly in food production," said Dr. Arlene Ponting, CEO, Science Alberta Foundation. "As a free iPhone or iTouch application, children can learn about science, anytime and anywhere, using new and exciting technology. What is also wonderful about the game is that it allows children to have fun while learning a science concept, which helps to develop life-long learners and create positive attitudes towards science."

Kelvin's Space Ranch is a futuristic space farm where participants role-play a farmer, performing tasks such as feeding and watering chickens and cows. They learn about egg and milk production and related information like pasteurizing milk.

According to Heather Desurvire, Professor of Game Usability at the University of Southern California and expert advisor to SAF, Kelvin's Space Ranch is at the forefront of a new trend in education. "We are increasingly seeing the fusion of gaming and learning - where educational games are positively impacting child learning and growth," said Desurvire. "Kelvin's Space Ranch has all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a videogame. It's a great example of an interactive and participatory space for children to think innovatively and creatively about science and technology."

Kelvin's Space Ranch is one of five Kelvin Adventures and is also available on SAF's Wonderville.ca, an online "town" filled with dozens of games and videos. These activities encourage children to be curious about the world around them and the fascinating science careers that this discipline entails.

For more information on Kelvin's Space Ranch, please download the game from the iTunes Apps store or visit www.wonderville.ca to play the game online.

Kelvin's Space Ranch was made possible by a grant from Alberta Milk, Alberta Egg Producers and Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency Ltd. (ALMA).
