LAC+USC Healthcare Network CEO Talks on Palliative Care's Bottom Line Effects

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - November 25, 2008) - Pete Delgado, Chief Executive Officer, LAC+USC Healthcare Network, will deliver a speech "Palliative Care and its Bottom Line Effects" to TOWN HALL Los Angeles at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel on Thursday, December 11, 2008. The event marks the last in a series sponsored by the California HealthCare Foundation.

Palliative care is comprehensive, interdisciplinary care that focuses on promoting quality of life for patients living with serious, chronic, or terminal illness, as well as emotional support for their families. The proportion of hospitals with palliative care programs has more than doubled since 2000 to 53% of all facilities with more than 50 beds.

"We have been able to manage symptoms and ease the pain of patients with advanced illness at the end of life...Our cost avoidance during the first year alone was over $8 million," says LAC+USC Director of Palliative Care, Susan C. Stone, MD.

The LAC+USC Network's centerpiece is the Medical Center. The completed replacement hospital is the largest building project ever undertaken by the County of Los Angeles. "It is my hope that this hospital will become a symbol of the health and vitality of this community and all of Los Angeles," says Delgado.

The California HealthCare Foundation is an independent philanthropy committed to improving the way health care is delivered and financed in California. By promoting innovations in care and broader access to information, our goal is to ensure that all Californians can get the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford.
