over 1,200 volunteers confirmed for Glen Arbour Attention: Sports Editor, Travel/Tourism Editor HALIFAX--(CCNMatthews - May 24, 2005) - The Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) announced Tuesday that Canadian Lorie Kane and defending champion Meg Mallon have confirmed their intent to compete for the 2005 BMO Financial Group Canadian Women's Open July 11th to 17th at Glen Arbour Golf Course in Halifax, N.S.

The RCGA is also proud to announce that Lorena Ochoa, currently the third-ranked player on the LPGA Tour money list, has also confirmed her intention to compete in this year's Canadian Women's Open.

Always a fan-favourite at the Canadian Women's Open, Kane will have all Maritime golf fans cheering her on in Halifax as the Charlottetown, P.E.I. native gets set to challenge for the event making it's first-ever appearance in Atlantic Canada.

The 10-year LPGA Tour veteran will be joined at Glen Arbour by fellow Canadian LPGA Tour players A.J. Eathorne of Calgary, Angela Buzminski of Oshawa, Ont., Isabelle Beisiegel of Montreal, Nancy Harvey of Swift Current, Sask. and Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Dawn Coe-Jones of Campbell River, B.C.

Mallon leads the field of LPGA Tour stars into Halifax tied for most career Canadian Women's Open victories. Her three Canadian titles, including last year's wire-to-wire victory in Niagara Falls ties her with Pat Bradley in Canadian golf's record books. Mallon also made history in 2004 by becoming the only player in LPGA Tour history to win both the Canadian and US Open titles in the same year.

"We've just confirmed Lorena Ochoa and with Meg set to go after her fourth title and Lorie playing practically in her back yard, Maritime golf fans will definitely be in for a treat this July," said Sean Van Kesteren, RCGA Director of Professional Women's Championships. "We're really excited about the way the entire city has rallied around this year's event thus far and I think it's safe to say we're expecting our most successful Canadian Women's Open ever."

Three other Canadians have also earned exemptions to compete at Glen Arbour in July through the BMO Financial Group Canadian Women's Tour. The players include 2004 Canadian Women's PGA champion Alena Sharp of Hamilton Ont., 2004 Canadian Women's Tour Championship winner Vicky Appleton of Peterborough, Ont. and Leila Chartrand who won the first event on the 2005 Canadian Women's Tour earlier this month in her hometown of Victoria. Also earning an exemption into this year's open is Jennifer Greggain of Chilliwack, B.C.

The RCGA has also granted sponsor's exemptions to a pair of notable Amateurs including 2004 Canadian Amateur Champion Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown, Ont. and Laura Matthews of Essex, Ont. who is currently a member of the RCGA's National Women's Amateur Team. One other exemption will be given to a National Team player following the British Ladies Amateur Championship in June.

With 2005 set to mark the return of major professional golf to Atlantic Canada for the first time in almost 66 years, tournament officials are also excited about the tremendous response to volunteer recruitment for the event. To date, over 1,200 volunteers are confirmed to take part in the action at Glen Arbour. Limited volunteer positions are still available by contacting the host club tournament office at (902) 832-2920.
