LTE on Target With Specifications Approval by 3GPP

3G Americas Applauds Standards Progress of LTE

BELLEVUE, WA--(Marketwire - January 21, 2008) - With the recent approval of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology specifications by the leading global wireless standards organization 3GPP, LTE is on target and continuing its momentum as the next phase of technology development for the GSM family of technologies, according to industry association 3G Americas.

"3G Americas has consistently supported the 3GPP standards for the GSM family of technologies and we applaud the progress of the LTE standard. LTE is a dynamic OFDM-based next generation technology with a great future. 3G Americas is committed to not only today's global leading standards of GSM, EDGE and UMTS/HSPA but also to the innovation that LTE provides our industry," stated Chris Pearson, President of 3G Americas.

3GPP LTE is the evolution of UMTS/HSPA and will utilize Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technology, also used in other technologies such as UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband) and mobile WiMAX. LTE uses advanced antenna techniques such as Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), which will allow operators to achieve even higher peak throughputs in higher spectrum bandwidth. LTE radio technology is optimized to enhance networks by enabling significant new high capacity mobile broadband applications and services.

Pearson added, "With this recent approval, the LTE Terrestrial Radio Access Network technology specifications will be under change control, and included in the forthcoming 3GPP Release 8."

LTE capabilities include:

-- Downlink peak throughput data rates up to 326 Mbps with 20 MHz
    bandwidth

-- Uplink peak throughput data rates up to 86 Mbps with 20 MHz bandwidth

-- Scalability to operate in a wide range of bandwidths from 1.4 - 20 MHz

-- Operability in both TDD and FDD modes

-- Reduced latency, to 10 milliseconds round-trip time between user
equipment and the base station, and to less than 100 milliseconds
transition time from inactive to active
