Celebrating 160 years, Labatt Breweries of Canada today introduced a commemorative anniversary label on bottles of Labatt Blue. To help mark the occasion, Labatt employees will be joined by London Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best and London Area MPP and Ontario Cabinet Minister Deb Matthews at an event hosted at the hometown brewery in London.

"Today we are officially recognizing Labatt's 160th anniversary to honour the brewery's rich heritage and significant contributions over the years," said Brad Hagan, brewery manager, London, Labatt Breweries of Canada. "The Labatt Blue limited edition bottle symbolizes the commitment to quality and brewing excellence which began in 1847 with John Labatt's first batch of beer and continues 160 years later with each bottle of beer we produce."

The Labatt 160th anniversary label is featured on bottles of Labatt Blue in the popular retro packaging on the 28-bottle packs of Labatt Blue at The Beer Store and LCBO Combination and Agency Store locations across Ontario for the month of November.

In congratulating Labatt on its special milestone, Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best paid tribute to the company's longstanding history in The Forest City. "The Labatt name is almost synonymous with London, as we recall the first brewery established here in 1847," said DeCicco-Best. "And, 160 years later, Labatt continues to be an innovative enterprise and a tangible link with London's notable past."

Coinciding with its 160th anniversary celebrations, Labatt will also announce the completion of its $40- million expansion project at its London brewery. The site features a new brew house, eight new combination fermenting and ageing tanks, a new yeast propagation facility, a more advanced can packer and three high-speed, automated palletizers.

"In celebration of its 160th anniversary year, I would like to congratulate Labatt on the occasion and recognize its commitment to the London community as one of the city's most significant business leaders," said London Area MPP and Ontario Cabinet Minister Deb Matthews. "Labatt continues to demonstrate its contributions to the Ontario economy, through employment opportunities, a value chain of Ontario suppliers and their most recent $40-million brewery expansion investment. We believe in investing in history and heritage, and are proud of Labatt's strong tradition of doing so over the past 160 years."

With the state-of-the-art brew house and additional fermentation tanks, Labatt almost doubles its capacity with production capabilities of more than one million bottles per day. In addition, the newly converted keg facility with cold storage enables Labatt to produce more than 300 kegs an hour.

"The success of this project is in large part due to the hard work of London brewery employees. As we track toward a record production year in the brewery's 160-year history, the completion of this $40 million project investment reinforces our commitment to innovation and quality," said Hagan.

Award-winning Labatt Blue has been quality brewed in the heritage of John Labatt since 1847. The Pilsner style lager is a full flavoured, easy drinking beer that has stood the test of time.
