Lawrence H. Summers to Keynote American Banker's 2007 Banker of the Year Awards

Former Secretary of Treasury to Address Critical Financial System Issues

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - September 27, 2007) - Lawrence H. Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury, will deliver the keynote address at the American Banker 2007 Banker of the Year Awards, a gala dinner to be held at New York's Pierre Hotel on Thursday, November 29th, the newspaper announced today.

"Professor Summers has built a world-class reputation -- in economics, in government, and in education," said David Longobardi, American Banker's editor-in-chief. "At this moment in American financial history, we're certain his comments will be challenging and enlightening."

Among the nation's foremost economists, Mr. Summers has served as Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Chief Economist of the World Bank and President of Harvard University. He is currently the Charles W. Eliot University Professor at Harvard.

As an economic adviser to President Clinton, and as Treasury secretary from 1999 to 2001, Mr. Summers was involved in every major economic policy decision ranging from the fiscal policies that created budget surpluses to the enactment of NAFTA to the response to financial crises in Mexico, Asia, and Russia. Throughout his term at Harvard (2001 to 2006), he was an advocate for reform in higher education.

Prof. Summers joins an accomplished group of keynote speakers who have addressed Banker of the Year guests -- an audience that last year numbered some 400 leaders from the financial services, government, and regulatory communities.

Prior speakers include Senator Tim Johnson (2006), former FDIC chairman and Katrina recovery czar Don Powell (2005), Congressman Barney Frank (2004), New York State Superintendent of Banking Diana Taylor (2003), New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer (2002), and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Mike Oxley (2001).

The annual Banker of the Year Awards honor the individuals who set the highest standards of progress, innovation, and performance in the banking and financial services industry.

Since the inaugural Best in Banking/Banker of the Year Awards dinner and ceremony in 2001, the gala has become the industry's premier event, attracting a who's who of lawmakers, regulators, and leading executives.
