Leading Local Blinds Company Reminds Arizonans to "Kid Proof" Their Blinds After the Latest Consumer Product Safety Commission Alert Determines Child Deaths Caused by Unsafe Blind Cords

Arizona Blinds Provides a "Break-Away" Safety Cord and Kid Safety Education in Response

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - December 15, 2009) - Following the latest Consumer Product Safety Commission alert issued this week that states that five more children died and another 16 have nearly strangled in the cords of the Roman shades, and that three child deaths have been linked to roll up blinds, Arizona Blinds wants to remind everyone that there are preventative measures that one must take prior to the installation of blinds and shades in order to keep their homes safe. Such precautions include the installation of a "break-away" safety cord and thorough education on child-proofing a home.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about one child per month strangles in window covering cords, often in the loop of the cords. At least two children since 1990 have died in child care settings after standing up in their cribs and becoming entangled in a window blind cord. Although new blinds are no longer manufactured with loops, many older blinds still have them.

"This is definitely a recall of historic proportions, and it is truly tragic that it takes additional kid deaths for people to realize that preventative measures are needed in the blinds and shades industry," says Mike O'Daniel, president of Arizona Blinds. "What we have found that has been truly effective here at Arizona Blinds, is that we first, inquire about kids in the house before installing any product, and if there are kids, we take preventative measures. We sell what is called 'break-away' safety cords to limit the number of incidents. If a child were to get caught in the cord, it would snap to prevent strangulation. It has required more labor on our part over the years in warranty servicing, but it's obviously been worth it since we are saving lives."

Arizona Blinds has been around for over 15 years, serving residents in Phoenix and Tucson, and continues to grow, having become a name that Arizonans can rely on when it comes to window coverings.

O'Daniel also commented, "While it is important that parents watch their children very closely around cords, the good news is that many of these incidents can be prevented by using simple child safety devices readily available on the market. Any safety device bought should be sturdy enough to prevent injury, yet still be easy to use."
