Les Amis de la Montagne: The 8 Protection Challenges for Mount Royal

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 10, 2007) - Les Amis de la montagne unveiled their "Map of Mount Royal: Protection Challenges" this afternoon, identifying the eight protection challenges facing the Mount Royal Historic and Natural District and the measures required to ensure the mountain's perpetuity.

The purpose of this map is to help interested parties and members of the community reflect upon the long-term protection of Mount Royal in preparation for the public consultations to be held in 2008 on the updated Mount Royal Master Protection and Enhancement Plan.

Despite the fact that the challenges related to the protection and enhancement of the mountain have been the subject of intense discussions among the members of the Table de concertation du Mont-Royal since the decree in 2005, Les Amis de la montagne conclude that imprecise rules and regulations and the absence of adequately defined priorities continues to threaten the integrity of the mountain.

"An understanding of the notion of protection is essential to the efficient and credible implementation of an eventual master plan for Mount Royal, as well as a management mechanism for the entire mountain territory," said Sylvie Guilbault, Executive Director, Les Amis de la montagne. "Mount Royal is in the centre of a city with multiple and complex interests. The mountain's protection and enhancement is a collective responsibility that demands the creativity and the commitment of all concerned, in order to develop and combine the necessary knowledge, talent and resources necessary for the benefit of Montreal today and tomorrow."

The 4th edition of the map of Mount Royal is a tool to assist in understanding the Historic and Natural District by depicting its territorial borders and its physical features. This publication, a departure from previous editions, also proposes a variety of measures that are needed to address the eight protection challenges identified by Les Amis de la montagne as follows:

1. Protect Montreal's identity

2. Preserve our built heritage

3. Preserve landscapes

4. Conserve natural habitats

5. Maintain and improve accessibility

6. Guarantee appropriate use

7. Invest in maintenance

8. Provide an integrated and transparent management framework
