London 2012 May See Electric Taxis

ESSEX, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - April 23, 2010) - The London taxi is arguably as British as bacon and eggs, drizzly weather and waiting in orderly queues; the vehicle is also iconic of the capital itself and London cabbies are renowned for their ability to regale passengers with all manner of stories as the meter ticks over. The taxi business in London is all set for change, however, with the introduction of the E-Vito – an electric taxi manufactured by Mercedes.

The E-Vito taxi, which has been partially funded by the UK Government's Advantage Niche Vehicle Research & Development Programme and is essentially a modified version of the Mercedes Vito taxi, was specially developed to evaluate the capabilities of electric vehicle technology in a commercial environment. Meeting the London Carriage Office requirements, the E-Vito taxi can travel 120km on a six-hour charge and can accommodate up to six people. The taxi is fitted with a 70kW (95hp) electric motor designed by Zytek, which is already present on the market, in addition to a 35kWh Valence Li-Ion battery pack and Vocis gearbox.

Before London cabbies choke on their bacon and eggs at the thought of driving something other than a traditional black cab, the E-Vito features all of the same features as the dependable petrol taxi; the E-Vito boasts a low centre of gravity to improve stability, increased interior space, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ESP (Electronic Stability Program), OBD (Onboard Diagnostics) and a steerable rear axle to achieve the requisite 7.6m turning circle. Crucially, the E-Vito will help to clean up the air in London and cabbies looking for taxi insurance may be able to enjoy substantial savings as a result of forthcoming green energy initiatives.

A spokesperson for DNA Insurance said: "The introduction of the electric E-Vito taxi ought to be met with considerable enthusiasm. Not only does the prospect of replacing traditional black cabs in London with state-of-the-art electric taxis raise hopes of a cleaner capital, it is likely that the average taxi insurance quote will be reduced as a result of green savings".
