From June 19 to September 30, 2009, over 700 bloggers from around the world competed to become Quark Expeditions Official Blogger. More than 16,000 of the nearly 80,000 voters chose Luis Monteiro, a 29 year-old Portuguese IT guy and radio personality. Monteiro waged an aggressive media campaign that spanned the globe and included appearances on television in a penguin costume!

Monteiro and a companion will spend 12 days on an Antarctic tour aboard Lyubov Orlova, blogging daily from February 20 to March 3, 2010. He promised his supporters, "I will use this unique opportunity to spread the word on how global warming is affecting the Antarctic." He assured voters that if he won the experience was "Gonna be legendary."

Three Americans - singer Kristina Horner - GrrlScientist Devorah Bennu - and Donny Osmond's blogging son, Don Osmond - came in second, third and fourth place respectively.

"Nearly 200,000 people visited the Blog Your Way to Antarctica web pages," said Quark's President Pat Shaw. "We were amazed at the ingenuity, enthusiasm and effort shown by all competitors."

To celebrate the success of the competition, Quark is offering free air transportation to Ushuaia from most major gateways to anyone who books a spot on the February 20th voyage with Quark's Official Blogger. For information about the free air transportation offer call 1-866-961-2960 or +1-203-803-2887. Armchair travelers can order Quark's free Expedition Cruise Guide online.

About Quark Expeditions

Since 1991, Quark Expeditions has established a tradition of firsts in polar expedition travel. The company was the first to transit the Northeast Passage with commercial passengers; the first to take travelers to the "far side" of Antarctica and the first to circumnavigate the Antarctic continent with guests, twice. Quark's diverse fleet provides the widest variety of polar itineraries of any other adventure company in the world, and the greatest number of departures to Antarctica. In October 2006 and 2007, Quark was named a recipient of National Geographic Traveler's "50 Tours of a Lifetime" for their "Emperor Penguin Safari" and the "Far Side" respectively. In the March 2006 edition, Outside magazine named the "Emperor Penguin Safari" as one of the New Trips of a Lifetime.
