On Thursday, September 17, 2009, M&M Meat Shops will once again step up to the plate and encourage Canadians to enjoy the tradition of the family dinner. A recent study conducted by Angus Reid Strategies reveals that 82 percent of Canadians believe they participated in family dinners more frequently growing up than families do today. Canadians' lives have never been busier; setting aside quality time for family is a challenge, however, the importance of family dinners reaches far beyond simply sharing a meal together. Gathering together around the dinner table presents a valuable opportunity to interact, strengthen relationships and affirm the value of each family member.

M&M Meat Shops' National Family Dinner Night has been bringing Canadian families closer together for the past five years by recognizing the importance of sharing a meal with family and friends. This annual event has gained tremendous support from families, community leaders and dignitaries across the country, and has contributed to the more than 18.3 million dollars M&M Meat Shops has raised for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC).

Register Your Participation

Each year M&M Meat Shops urges everyone in Canada to register their participation online to demonstrate the significance of getting together with the people who matter most to them. For each participant who registers in National Family Dinner Night at www.mmmeatshops.com or www.nationalfamilydinnernight.com, M&M Meat Shops will make a $1 donation to the CCFC, up to a maximum of $100,000.

"Sitting down for a meal together can have a lasting, positive effect on open communication between children and parents," says Mac Voisin, founder of M&M Meat Shops. "National Family Dinner Night encourages busy families to reconnect by spending quality time together, talking and sharing around the dinner table while supporting a worthy cause."

Making Meal Time Effective

Sharing a meal together can help strengthen the bond between family members, but the time should be used effectively in order to make a lasting impact.

The Angus Reid Strategies study also found that 47 percent of Canadians feel that children today don't have the same freedom as they did growing up. "The world is a different place today and parents are faced with the tough task of safely allowing our kids to have independence," says Erica Ehm, founder and editor-in-chief of YummyMummyClub.ca. "The dinner table is one place where we can help nurture independence in youth."

An important part of making mealtimes more significant is to treat children as adults at the dinner table. "Create one meal for the entire family to eat," suggests Ehm. "Ask your kids to listen to their bodies as they eat and when they don't want to eat anymore, cover the remaining food and save it in case they are hungry later. By allowing kids to have some say over how they eat, we can teach them to make independent choices."

Make your family a priority during meals; turn off cell phones and TVs and focus on each other. By removing distractions, you can tune in and open up and share. "Introduce ideas and current events to the conversation at the table and let your kids express their views to help develop their independent voice." says Ehm.

"National Family Dinner Night celebrates loved ones spending quality time together and it is an important date where families can begin to make meal time effective."
