MEDIA ALERT: The Computer History Museum Waves Farewell to Its Visible Storage Exhibit With a Special Weekend Celebration

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - December 7, 2009) -

WHO: The Computer History Museum (CHM)

WHAT: The Computer History Museum is hosting a weekend celebration
for visitors to honor and say good-bye to the Visible Storage
Exhibit, which will be closing as a first step in preparing for
the major, new exhibition opening in the late 2010.

The celebration and open house will include specially themed,
docent-led tours of the Exhibit and an afternoon reception with
          holiday treats on Sunday.

The Visible Storage Exhibit consists of 600 unique artifacts that
span the history of computing from pre-computing to
supercomputing and reflects the astonishing development in
technology, from rare slide rules and mechanical calculators to
the earliest one-of-a-kind computers. Nearly every object
displayed in Visible Storage was created in the last century and
most since WWII. That places the entire field of computer
development in the same time scale as a tree, a sea turtle, or
a house-not a very long time at all. Yet during that brief
historical period, computers have shown themselves to be unlike
any other artifact -- indeed, the computer is really the
universal
artifact, capable of becoming nearly anything its designers and
users desire. The Visible Storage Exhibit has been a visitor
favorite at the museum since 2003.
