Major Repair Work Will Extend Service of Coast Guard Vessel and Will Strengthen Local Economy

Canada's Economic Action Plan at Work

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 22, 2009) - David Sweet, MP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale announced today on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that workers and businesses in the Hamilton area will benefit from major repair work to ready the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Limnos for another ten years of service.

"Our Government's investment in the Coast Guard is also an investment in the local shipbuilding industry," said Mr. Sweet. "The $7M contract for the refit of the CCGS Limnos has been awarded to Heddle Marine Service Inc. in Hamilton, Ontario".

As part of the vessel life extension project, the CCGS Limnos will undergo replacement of the propulsion system, replacement of electrical generators, installation of a new alarm and monitoring system, as well as having its accommodations and lab spaces updated. The Canadian Coast Guard expects that these repairs will ensure the vessel remains in service for another ten years.

Based in Burlington, the CCGS Limnos is a limnographic survey vessel, used to conduct valuable research and monitoring on the Great Lakes. Its work supports science conducted by Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans to address important issues such as climate change, impact of invasive species, nutrient enrichment and toxic chemicals management. The vessel also supports commitments under the Canada-US Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

"The investment we're making through Canada's Economic Action Plan will create jobs for Canadians, benefit local businesses and strengthen the economy in Hamilton," added Mr. Sweet.

Over the next two years, $175 million will be invested in the Coast Guard under the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
