March Housing Starts Up in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) - According to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), housing starts in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) totaled 28 units in March, up from the 18 units started in March 2009.

"First quarter new residential construction is up this year, given Windsor's brighter prospects," said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "Green energy investment plans, recalls of workers and a closer balance between listings and sales in the existing home market have been positive factors," added Stevenson.

Starts in the Windsor area were all single-detached homes, up 56 per cent from March 2009 figures. Year-to-date, builders started 67 single-detached homes and four townhouse units in the Windsor CMA, up 103 per cent from the first quarter of 2009.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
