Matthews Media Directory Celebrates 50th Anniversary Milestone

Canada's First Media Directory Remains the Most Trusted Source of Contact Information for Communication Professionals

TORONTO--(Marketwire - October 10, 2007) - Marketwire, a full-service newswire and communications workflow solutions provider, celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Matthews Media Directory, the most comprehensive listing of print and broadcast media in Canada and the source most trusted by communication professionals.

The Directory, or "The Red Book" as it is often called because of its distinctive red cover, compiles detailed information and in-depth profiles for newspapers, TV and radio stations, and trade publications across Canada. Published by Marketwire twice a year, the book remains a trusted source of at-your-fingertips media contact information, allowing subscribers across North America to quickly research reporters and outlets.

"This is indeed a proud moment for Marketwire and the Matthews Media Directory," said Catharine Hancock, media database manager, Marketwire. "These books have grown in tandem with the media industry in Canada, and our top priority has always been to meet the ever-increasing demand from public relations practitioners and communication professionals for high-quality, accurate media data."

The origin and history of Matthews Media Directory made for an interesting feature article in 1988. "The Matthews list was born out of necessity," said journalist Adrian Waller. In 1956, a senior federal Department of Industry officer named Ted Bullock was assigned to promote Canadian businesses and industries involved in the following year's Brussels World Fair. A list of every media outlet in the country, he felt, might help him to do his job better. So he suggested his friend, Syd Matthews, compile that list.

Matthews' professional media experience and a catalogue-like memory helped create the country's first list of media outlets, and after copyrighting his idea, Matthews and his wife, Ev, published the first edition in 1957. At 13 pages, the list contained the mailing address and senior personnel for 23 daily newspapers and was mailed to 33 subscribers. Today, the directory boasts 1,330 pages covering 5,500 publications and reaches more than 1,000 subscribers.

Publishers Robbie and Neil Oakley purchased the publication from the Matthews in 1977, and in 1991, Marketwire (at that time Canadian Corporate News) acquired the directory from Southam Inc. It was at that point when the books first combined the existing directory data with the data available within the newswire's proprietary systems, creating an unbeatable source of media contacts. The print directories took on various forms as technology and the need for electronic access to media information grew; data went onto diskettes and CD-ROM in 1998 with Matthews Media Mastermind (M3), and in 2003 Marketwire's media management solution Listlogix was introduced, taking online media data to an entirely new level. Both Matthews Media Directory and Listlogix continue to supply up-to-the-minute, premier media data to subscribers worldwide.
