McGuinty Record on Standards for Seniors in Long Term Care

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 4, 2007) - Before the election the McGuinty Liberals promised:

Ernie Eves does not believe in giving our most frail and vulnerable elderly even one bath per week. He cut the standard of 3 baths per week and at least 2.25 hours of nursing care per day. Now there are no standards. Only Dalton McGuinty and the Ontario Liberals are committed to setting high standards in our nursing homes.

- Liberal Release, July 17, 2003

But after the election McGuinty Minister George Smitherman dismissed the idea:

While Smitherman said he's open to looking at an average standard of care across the province, he's not interested in setting a daily minimum of hours for each patient.

"It pretends that every patient in long-term care is the same," he said.

- Canadian Press, January 23, 2007

Later, they insisted that they would set minimum standards by regulation but - as of today - there are no standards:

In spite of repeated government promises and a brand new piece of legislation, there still are no minimum standards for the hours of personal care a nursing home resident must receive.
