Media Advisory: Afghanistan Deployment Open House-Interview Opportunities

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 28, 2010) - The Toronto Military Family Resource Centre (TMFRC) is offering a rare opportunity as they invite media to their "Deployment Open House" for the families of almost 200 soldiers about to deploy to Afghanistan. The event will take place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 30.

This is a very emotional time for the families and their soldiers. More than two thirds of the soldiers have already been away from their families on deployment training since approximately September 2009 and have limited time before they depart for their six-month tour in Afghanistan. While some soldiers and their families would like their fellow Canadians to know the sacrifices associated with a deploying family member, other soldiers will prefer privacy. We ask media who wish to attend to phone in advance in order to make arrangements for private interviews.

The TMFRC are expecting more than 300 family members, friends and soldiers. The Deployment Open House will include information booths on:

"Life at Kandahar Air Field: de-classified pictures, videos, local food, etc.

"Ask a soldier!" What's a FOB? ISAF?

"The home experience: discuss it with family members of the previously deployed"

"Support services offered at the TMFRC"

Of the Regular and Reserve Force members who will be present, many of the deploying soldiers at this event are Army Reservists, normally part-time soldiers from our community who volunteered for the opportunity to serve with Canadian Forces mission in Afghanistan.

The TMFRC is a non-profit organization providing the ongoing unique support required by military families within the Greater Toronto Area with a view to recognizing existing strengths while fostering independence, stability and resiliency.

NOTE TO EDITORS: The Toronto Military Family Resource Center is located at 5 Yukon Lane, which is one block west of the intersection of Sheppard Avenue West and Allen Road, Toronto. Although the event is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. media are asked to limit their stay to 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Private appointments outside of this timeframe may be available upon request.
