Media Advisory: CUPE to Hold Emergency Rally Against Ambulance Privatization Tomorrow, June 5

NORTH BAY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 4, 2009) - Privatizing emergency medical services (EMS) in West Nipissing will divert already scarce resources into private profits and undermine community safety, says the union representing West Nipissing paramedics, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 1101.

CUPE 1101 will hold an emergency rally tomorrow:

WHAT: Rally against EMS privatization

WHERE: Outside City Hall, 200 McIntyre Street East, North Bay

WHEN: Friday, June 5, 2009, 1:00 PM

The Nipissing District Social Services Administration Board is holding a briefing tomorrow at City Hall for companies interested in privatizing the public service. CUPE paramedics will rally outside to draw attention to the risks of privatizing emergency services.

West Nipissing, with a population of 13,000, only receives 20 hours of EMS coverage daily. Introducing a profit motive will put even more pressure on resources and could lead to less service, the union says.
