Media Advisory: CUPE to Present Case for Keeping Ambulance Service Public

Union will ask West Nipissing Town Council to vote against privatization

NORTH BAY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 14, 2009) - The union representing West Nipissing paramedics, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will ask West Nipissing Town Council to vote against the privatization of its ambulance service at council's meeting tonight.

Privatizing emergency medical services (EMS) in West Nipissing will divert already scarce resources into private profits and undermine community safety, says CUPE.

CUPE members will pack council chambers and urge Councillors to vote against privatization.

WHAT: West Nipissing Town Council Meeting

WHERE: Municipal Main Office, 225 Holditch Street, Sturgeon Falls

WHEN: Tuesday, July 14, 7:00 PM

West Nipissing, with a population of 13,000, only receives 20 hours of EMS coverage daily. Introducing a profit motive will put even more pressure on resources and could lead to less service, the union says.
