Media Advisory - Canadian Hydro Holds Official Opening of $65-million Grande Prairie EcoPower® Centre

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB--(CCNMatthews - May 10) -

What: Canadian Hydro will hold the Official Opening of the Grande
Prairie EcoPower® Centre on Friday, May 12. This
$65 million, 25 MW biomass facility generates enough green
power to supply 21,000 households each year.

Fast Facts on Biomass as Renewable or "Green" Electricity

- Use of mill waste is growing rapidly in western Canada.
High natural gas prices drive conversion of mills to wood
energy systems.
- In Canada, biomass supplies 5.9% of primary energy
demand, and could provide up to 27% of current energy
needs in Canada. Approximately 1.5% of installed
electrical generating capacity in Alberta is biomass.
- Most wood residue in the province is incinerated,
creating air pollution and wasted energy. Biomass
recycles wood waste into green electricity and heat.
- The Province of Alberta and the City of Grande Prairie
hope to save several million per year on electricity.
