Media Advisory: Ceremony to Mark National Peacekeepers' Day in Calgary

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Aug. 8, 2008) - Representing the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Art Hanger, Member of Parliament for Calgary Northeast, accompanied by Colonel (Retired) Don Ethell of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP), will attend the sixth annual Peacekeepers' Day Ceremony in Peacekeepers Park, on August 10, 2008.

This ceremony will mark National Peacekeepers' Day. With the passing of the Peacekeepers' Day Bill on June 18, 2008, this day is being nationally commemorated for the first time on August 9, 2008. On this day, Canada honours peacekeeping Veterans, those currently serving in Peace Support Operations and those who have died serving. Canadian peacekeepers help bring sustainable peace and security to countries devastated by conflict. Canada's Armed Forces, Canadian diplomats, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, provincial and municipal police forces, and civilians all take part in peacekeeping efforts.
