Media Advisory: Change in Leadership at OFL

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 20, 2009) - Elections will be held next week for three full-time officers of the Ontario Federation of Labour. Voting will take place on Wednesday, November 25 at the OFL Convention in Toronto, pending an agenda-setting decision by delegates when the convention opens on Monday, November 23.

OFL president Wayne Samuelson and secretary-treasurer Irene Harris have decided not to seek re-election. President for 12 years, Samuelson's lengthy labour history includes a labour staff position, heading a local union and labour council, and experience as a municipal Councillor.

Harris has also held OFL office for 12 years, first as executive vice-president from 1997 to 2005, then secretary-treasurer. She has been an activist and leader in the labour movement for more than 30 years. Her work for equity and social justice includes her time with the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Toronto & York Region Labour Council. She was the first executive director for the council's Labour Community Services.

Executive vice-president Terry Downey will seek re-election to the office she has held since 2005. Her background is with the Ontario Human Rights Commission and the Ontario Public Service Employees' Union. She is the first African-Canadian to serve as an OFL executive officer.
