Media Advisory: First-Ever Wiener Dog Race at Hastings Draws 32 Entries for Saturday Showdown

It's a "Wiener Take All" Challenge with $1,000 In Purse Money

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - July 16, 2009) - Hastings Racecourse has offered live thoroughbred horse racing throughout its 120-year history. Thoroughbreds, however, are not the only animals that have competed at Hastings. Buffalo Races, Ostrich Races and Man vs. Animal Races have been staged at Vancouver's landmark race track. But never before - until now - have there been Wiener Dog Races.

A total of 32 wiener dogs plus eight listed as "also eligible's" are ready to go at Hastings Saturday afternoon in four different heats with the top two finishers from each heat advancing to the Championship Final. And from all reports, these little doggies are hot to trot!

This all-new 'Dash of the Dachshunds' has drawn entries from Vancouver, Victoria, Surrey and Mission with names ranging from Sadie, to Yogi to Shorty and Sophie. Most are in the 10-12 pound weight class while others have obviously eaten better and exercised less, weighing in as high as 17 and 19 pounds.

Co-sponsored by Hastings and Schneiders, the four trial heats will go at approximately 1:44 p.m., 2:14 p.m., 2:44 p.m. and 3:14 p.m. Each heat is 30 yards away from the finish line at track level. With $1,000 up for grabs in purse money, the championship heat will commence at approximately 4:15 p.m., at which time the first-ever Hastings Wiener Dog Champion will be honoured in, of course, the wiener's circle.
