Media Advisory: Hong Kong Veterans to Be Honoured With Plaque Unveiling

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2007) - Steven Fletcher, M.P. for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, will join George Peterson, President of the Hong Kong Veterans Association, in a ceremony to unveil a plaque dedicated to the Winnipeg Grenadiers, who served in Hong Kong during the Second World War.

In December 2005, during the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Hong Kong Prisoners of War, a plaque dedicated to the Winnipeg Grenadiers was unveiled in Hong Kong at the top of a very steep hill which overlooks the Wong Nei Chong Gap. A duplicate plaque was placed at the base of the hill for the comfort and safety of the Veterans and officials attending. Following the ceremony, the duplicate plaque was shipped to Canada and will be unveiled, in honour of the Winnipeg Grenadiers, at its new permanent home at Brookside Cemetery.
